Great Stuff from The Beeb

The BBC can go ages without mentioning tattooing at all, and then when it does it’ll bring out a load of great things, all at once. I love it, and I love to know there’s at least one mainstream media outlet that can treat tattooing fairly. This week, there’s an article and a video on the BBC News website, which explores tattooing in a really great way. The first is an article which asks why people choose to get multiple tattoos. Where the Daily Mail or My Tattoo Addiction may laugh at that, and treat those with tattoos like they’re addicted freaks, the BBC actually states how stupid it is to think in that way, which is lovely to read! Here’s an excerpt:

The trend inspired a Channel 4 series titled My Tattoo Addiction, which focused on individuals covered with extensive and sometimes outlandish arrays of ink.

But it’s generally misleading to talk about the practice in terms of addicts and dependence, says Viren Swami, a University of Westminster psychologist who has conducted extensive studies of people with tattoos.

People typically take between two and seven years before getting their second tattoo, Swami says. If anything, he argues, people tend to consider their choices more carefully after their first because they have been made acutely aware at the point of a needle what it entails.

Fantastic stuff! The article then goes on to talk about the differences between those who have tattoos and who don’t- and show that a study states there aren’t any differences! Who knew?! Joking aside, they’ve done a really good job in defending tattooing, especially so close to the stupid Channel 4 TV show last week.

There’s also a cool video on the BBC News website from this week, which talks about women in tattooing, which was recorded at the London Tattoo Convention over the weekend. There’s a lot on there from visitors at the convention, talking about their own tattoos, how things have changed for them, and how they think they’re perceived. It’s a lot of fun to watch, and it’s again nice to see they’ve done this in a really tasteful way. Nice one, Beeb!
