Is the Czech Republic ready for its first tattooed president?

The Czech Republic could be about to welcome its first heavily tattooed president.

Politician, artist, and composer Vladimír Franz is in the running for the presidential race, and seems to be doing well. He is proving popular with the electorate, especially those under the age of 30, among whom he has taken one-third of the vote, according to a report by ABC News.

Initially seen as something of a joke candidate, Franz now has 11.4% of the popular vote, based on opinion polls, placing him third out of nine hopefuls in the race for the country’s top job.

Franz, 53, is a very accomplished and fascinating man. He holds a law degree, and is a drama professor, a postmodernist painter, a stage designer, and an opera composer.

He has tattoos covering almost all his body, as well as an array of piercings, and often has blue hair.

“My tattoos are my private little garden. They are not a handicap, they are added value,” Franz told ABC News. “Elections are not a beauty contest. It is all about tolerance.”

His policies include a focus on education, culture, morality and tolerance, and he wants to “fight for the people” of his country.

Voting takes place this weekend and a runoff is scheduled for the weekend of 25th and 26th of January. In a world which needs more tolerance, as well as appreciation of the arts, I will certainly be crossing my fingers for Franz.

It was fun to see him running in the election. As I do not have full citizenship in the Czech Republic I could not vote, but it was interesting to hear what my Czech friends and colleagues had to say about the whole matter. Largely, I don’t think anyone expected him to win.

I met quite a few people who said they would have voted for him if it weren’t for the tattoos. Their reluctance to vote for him mostly stemmed from their worries about how the rest of the world would view the country when he went to international events and met with foreign heads of state.

I do understand the concerns; tattoos, like anything else, can be overdone. However, I have to say that I would have found it very entertaining to see a picture of him lined up with a bunch of other world leaders at some very high profile event.
