Alex Binnie: The Woodcut Portraits

I know we’ve been a bit heavy on books lately, but there are some really cool ones out right now, a lot more than usual. This week we’ve got word of a fantastic book by tattooer Alex Binnie. Alex has been putting together woodcuts for this book, of many tattooers he’s friends with.

I think this is pretty interesting, at least from my point of view. There are some tattooers whose work I know like the back of my hand, but I have no idea what they even look like. That curiosity is sort of strange, but interesting. Even if you don’t wonder what these guys look like, the woodcuts are absolutely astounding.

Here’s some information we received:

Including such famous names as Filip Leu, Freddy Corbin, Jondix and Thomas Hooper, alongside co-workers and clients from his London shop, Into You, this series of intimate portraits expands his artistic boundaries.

Influenced by the great tattoo and printmaking traditions of the past, Alex takes his skill and vision in an entirely new direction, totalling 36 prints and with an introduction and short description of each subject, we see the classic form of printmaking in a contemporary context.
This volume is available in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies, making it a real collectors’ item.
Foreword by Henk Schiffmacher
All this and a foreword by Henk Schiffmacher? Well I’m sold.
If you’d like to buy this book, you can do so here. If you’re a cheapskate and need convincing before you lay down dollas, you can have a look at the cool pictures we were sent, or even wait for the review we’ll have up here in the near future!
