Phil Kyle: “Destroy the Circus”.

Today, I was going to talk about the new Grime episode of Tattoo Age that came out, but everyone keeps sending me this link today so I’ll talk about Grime tomorrow for you all.

On one of my favourite blogs, the Tattoo Artist Magazine blog, Phil Kyle pretty much let rip today. Not in a bad way, though- he shared his thoughts about an array of things that are hindering a positive growth of tattooing, such as eBay kits, the Internet and the fact that too many people seem to think tattooing is just some cool hobby type job that they don’t have to take seriously. From Phil:

I’m up most of night until 2 or 3 a.m. drawing for clients, because it’s a serious game.
Meanwhile, dickheads are posting tattoos all over the Internet they have done in a garage and getting praise from their friends how “awesome” it is.  It’s an awesome piece of shit to us.

Read the full thing here. And read everything else on there while you’re at it- as I’ve pointed out before, Tattoo Artist Magazine’s blog is pretty cool.

Phil’s blog post is really cool, but it’s also a little disheartening because he talks so generally about the things that are wrong in tattooing right now- and you’re reminded that there’s a lot of things going on out there. I was reminded of too many people I know about, who couldn’t finish an apprenticeship, got their necks tattooed to try and prove a point, then opened up right next to a great tattoo studio, offering cheap shitty tattoos- and people actually get tattooed there. It disappoints me a lot.

The blog post is really cool, and you should check it out, if you aren’t one of the 30 people who’ve already seen it and emailed me, haha. I think there are a fair few things in there that tattooers and customers alike should maybe have a little think about, as a collective conscious usually makes much better decisions. It also means that some people will see it and re-think getting tattooed by the dickhead they met in a club who brags about being a tattooer when they’re shit, haha. Also, here is Phil’s studio’s website, just click on the logo below to see it.
