Reuters TV: Addicted To the Needle – Rough Cuts
Reuters TV recently produced a five minute and forty second video showcasing tattoo competitions, and the art behind it all. For me this is a video that is a breath of fresh air amongst some of the drivel produced for television, which rarely shows the world of tattooing in a true light, nor even details a correct process for tattooing.
Addicted to the needle shows tattooing for exactly what it is: a love, a passion, a declaration of intent, and a great art form. It is amazing that in six minutes you can really capture the essence of what people who have not only enter the competitions shown in it, but everybody with tattoos love so much about this art.
In the opening scenes there was one sentence that particularly struck a chord with me, although I do not enjoy the term “tattoo gun”, the sentence, “The tattoo gun is definitely addictive, you hear it…. You want it.” This resonated round my head for ages after watching the video, and in my case it could not be more true. As soon as I hear the buzz, or even have a mention of tattoos I want more, straight away.
As mentioned by Robert Siebert, “Tattooing is a part of my life”, this sums the video up in one- not only for the people tattooing, but the people collecting them. I like to think that everybody who has a tattoo, in some way shape or form has a little bit of their life in tattooing.
One thing that is for sure, some of the work on show within the video is amazing, world class work. One of my particular favourites is a Captain America piece created by Sean Karn, which captures everything the client wanted to achieve. It was also humbling to hear artists’ talk about not only the tattoos, but the importance of their clients, and their clients’ stories and issues. This, for some people, is one of the biggest factors in getting a tattoo.
Finally, after yearning for a video to watch over and over again since the tattoo age videos were released, I’ve found a video that touches on the differences between the new and old guard of tattooing. Shannon Toohey talks about her experiences of growing up now, but being around the old school, which is extremely cool and valuable to anyone who is new to tattooing.
This video covers everything that is good about great tattooing, and excellent tattoo artists in the space of a just shy of six minutes video. This has been an excellent outing from the people at Reuters TV, and I for one would love to see more in the future!

Rich Jones spends his time getting great tattoos and learning Journalism and Media, which he’s going to ace a degree in, in September. When he isn’t having needles stuck in him or writing long words, he loves rugby and music.
