Tattoo Adverts: How To Shit On An Ancient Art Form

Picture: OffbeatINK
During the past few years, the trend for advertising via tattoos has increased. A lot. What used to be an ancient craft has, yet again, become a way for someone to make money. It’s such a shame, and this doesn’t look like a trend that will be coming to a halt any time soon.
For whatever reasons, some people will now go to places like aBay to advertise their own skin for sale. They may be in need of some money, they may be raising some for charity or they may, in some unfortunate cases, just be after some attention. Whatever the reason, companies love it.
But why? Because it’s different. Because you’re more likely to remember seeing an advertisement for diet pepsi on someone’s skin than on the vending machine advert. Or because it’ll generate some free publicity (remember the palm pre tattoo from a few months ago?). Whatever reason, companies will snap up the opportinuty for the creative and unusual advertisement.
But aren’t these willing volunteers basically prostituting their skin? The fad of whatever product they’re trying to sell is going to fade, but the tattoo won’t. Why go to such extremes for the sake of money? I think there’s nothing more sad than seeing someone sell themselves short like this, nevermind the way they’re doing this with tattoos, something that’s supposed to be a form of self- expression, not a tool to create a walking billboard.
There are millions of ways of making money out there- please don’t shit on tattoo art just for your own benefit, you’ll just look like a stupid attention seeker. Why not stick with some beautiful Japanese art, or some old school designs instead of that ugly advert?
